How to detect internal cracks in aluminum alloy die-castings?
Detecting products through non-destructive testing.
1. Ultrasonic testing
Ultrasonic testing and ultrasonic thickness measurement of various types of metal pipes, plates, castings, forgings, and welds.
When ultrasound encounters defects such as cracks, voids, and segregation during propagation, the acoustic parameters such as sound speed, amplitude, and frequency will change accordingly. By measuring these changes with instruments, the presence of defects can be determined, and their specific locations can be identified.
Ultrasonic pulses (usually at 1.5 MHz) are emitted from the probe into the object being inspected. If there are internal defects, an interface exists between the defect and the material, resulting in a part of the emitted ultrasound being reflected or refracted at the defect. Consequently, a portion of the originally unidirectional propagating ultrasonic energy is reflected, which leads to a corresponding decrease in the energy passing through this interface. At this time, a reflected wave from the defect can be received in the reflection direction; the ultrasonic energy received in the propagation direction will be less than the normal value. The occurrence of these two situations can both demonstrate the existence of a defect. In flaw detection, the ability of the probe to receive pulse signals can also be used to check the position and size of the defect. The former is called the reflection method, while the latter is called the transmission method.
2. Magnetic Particle Testing
Suitable for non-destructive testing of ferromagnetic materials such as cast, forged, and other machined components.
3. Ultraviolet lamp
Low cost, high reliability, and easy operation; leak detection for various pipelines, inspection of coating uniformity, detection of impurities or stains, as well as applications in the semiconductor and biological fields, medicine, and special artistic effects on stage.
4. Ray Testing
Radiographic testing can be divided into three types: X-ray, gamma-ray, and high-energy ray testing.
X-ray radiographic testing is based on the attenuation laws of radiation in materials and the photochemical and fluorescence effects produced in certain substances. From the perspective of radiation intensity, when the intensity of the radiation incident on the workpiece is J0, the intensity is reduced to Jc due to the attenuation of the workpiece material. If there are defects in the workpiece, the actual thickness of the workpiece that the radiation passes through at that point is reduced, resulting in the radiation intensities Ja and Jb being slightly higher than the intensity at defect-free points. From the perspective of the photochemical effect of radiation on the film, stronger radiation causes a more significant photochemical effect on the film, meaning a larger amount of light-sensitive exposure. The film that has received more exposure becomes darker after being processed in a darkroom. Therefore, the defects in the workpiece produce black marks on the film due to the radiation, which is the principle of defect detection in X-ray radiography.
